A Dancing City: CIUDANZA 2011
During four days in March eccentrically dressed men and women will run riot throughout three public urban spaces in Buenos Aires. Don’t be scared…these people are not, in fact, ‘locos’ (crazies). They are part of the exciting contemporary dance festival know as Ciudanza!
From the 10th to the 13th of March the Ministry of Culture of Buenos Aires will host the fourth edition of Ciudanza, Dance in Urban Landscapes. Fifteen dance companies will take over some of the more unconventional public spaces in Buenos Aires to perform creative choreographed routines that incorporate the unusual surrounding scenery. Their stage will be monuments, trees, benches, stairs…well, anything they can get there feet on! The out-door event aims to bring dance to the public and the public to dance whilst encouraging cultural diversity and creative involvement with the landscapes and architectural heritage of the city.
The project is part of a cultural program called “Ciudades Que Danzan”(Cities that Dance). Other similarly inspiring events have already occurred in cities throughout Europe and America, including Barcelona, Lisbon, Bologna, London and Havana, among others.
Performances can be seen in Plaza San Martín de Tours and the plaza surrounding the monument to Charles de Alvear on the 10th and 11th of March at 8pm, at Memorial Park on the 12th and 13th at 3pm and at Plaza Miserere on the 12th and 13th at 6pm. There will also be free dance workshops on these days for those with more of an extroverted nature!
So be as mad as a March hare, be adventurous, do something new and exciting this month; get involved in the bizarre, colourful and wonderful dance scenarios of Ciudanza!
