If you are visiting Buenos Aires between the 6th and 10th of May 2012, don’t miss out on one of the biggest events of the year! Ciudad Emergente is a free festival organized by Buenos Aires’s Minister of Culture, and has been going on since 2008. This year’s 5thedition will be located, as every previous year, in the Cultural Center of Recoleta (Centro Cultural de Recoleta).
On its many stages you will be able to enjoy more than 50 bands and soloists from Argentina and other countries of the world, playing rock, pop and hip hop music. Throughout these 4 days, famous artists such as Ximena Sariñana, Adanowsky and Zoe (Mexico), Los Planetas and Russian Red (Spain), Mademoiselle K and Mustang (France), The Ganjas(Chile) and Macaco Bong (Brazil) will be performing their best songs for the crowd’s upmost delight. But Ciudad Emergente isn’t only about music. The festival also gives the chance for young artists to share their talent with the people of Buenos Aires. There will be digital art shows, poem recitals, fashion shows from new designers, urban street dancing and art, standup comedy, and cinema.
In 2011, half a million people assisted the spectacular event.
This year Ciudad Emergente in Buenos Aires will be combining exhibits of both street and digital art. It will be a great occasion to discover emerging young artists as well as a whole new concept of modern art. If you are a fashion lover, Ciudad Emergente is a great place to get a first peek at the new trends of some of South America’s best new designers. And if you enjoy a good laugh, the festival will be host to the funniest stand-up comedians Argentina has to offer.

When arriving into Buenos Aires, you would normally hear the taxis horns honking as they weave in and out of the traffic and you would normally see hundreds of people rushing around the Microcentro on their way to work. This Thursday and Friday is a little different.

The 8th December is a Catholic National Holiday called the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. As this festival is non-movable, this year it falls on a Thursday meaning, the Friday is also made into a holiday known as, the National Tourists Day. The Porteños migrate to the beaches of Uruguay or the coastal region of Mar del Plata, leaving the city free for you to explore and enjoy. Here are some ideas of things to do over the extended weekend.

Sightsee around the beautiful city:
Start off exploring Buenos Aires at the Teatro Colón and walk down the widest avenue in the world, 9 de Julio and stop off at the impressive Obelisk. Head over to Plaza de Mayo to see the Houses of Parliament (Pink House) and end up at the graceful ‘Woman’s Bridge’ in the trendiest and most modern area of Buenos Aires, Puerto Madero. Here you can sit back and relax next to the beautiful docks. It would roughly take 40 minutes to an hour to do this walking tour of the must see landmarks in Buenos Aires. Click here to see a route of your walking tour.

Things To Do over the extended weekend.1. Mar del Plata 2. Bosques de Palermo 3. MALBA

Top up that all important tan:
If you want to relax, Buenos Aires on a National Holiday is the perfect place to do this. Go to one of the many beautiful parks in Palermo such as, Bosques de Palermo or the Botanical Gardens and sit back, relax and soak up the rays. If you are going to one of the parks, make sure you don’t forget your sun cream, water and of course, to ensure you look the part, your mate.

Visit one of the many public swimming pools in the city such as, Parque President Sarmiento. Alternatively, go to one of the quieter private swimming pools such as, Parque Norte (http://www.parquenorte.com/). Make sure you are careful with your belongings when in the pool and get there early to claim your patch of grass with your towel as it will be busy!
El Ateneo Library

It’s too hot to do anything:
That’s where you are wrong. Head to one of the many air-conditioned museums in Buenos Aires and see why Buenos Aires is known as the capital of culture in Latin America. All the museums are free on National Holidays, so take advantage and go to the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires (MALBA) or the Faena Arts Centre in Puerto Madero. Grab a book and sit down on the chairs provided or at the cafe in the most impressive and beautiful library, El Ateneo Gran Splendid.

Otherwise, get those last few Christmas presents at one of the modern shopping centres in Buenos Aires such as, Alto Palermo or Abasto Shopping Centre which have many of the famous brands as well as having fantastic food on offer.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy the weather in a calmer Buenos Aires and start exploring Buenos Aires!

If you are travelling to Buenos Aires this weekend, and looking for things to do , you could not have chosen a better weekend to be here. On the 12th November, two of Buenos Aires’s largest annual activities are taking place. If electronic music is what you love, then you need to head over to the Creamfields Festival. However, if you want to take part in an amazing cultural experience or want a quieter evening, you should go tour around the Night of the Museums.

Creamfields is in its foreign birthplace, Buenos Aires, for its 11th consecutive year. Only two years after the festival was born in Liverpool in the United Kingdom, the festival was brought to Buenos Aires in 2001, which became the first international venue for the event. Creamfields is the home of local and internationally renowned electronic DJs. In 2010, over 50,000 people attended and the world record was set for the largest dance floor in the world! This year, Creamfields is expected to be just as big and promises to live up to these expectations due to the performers’ line-up . You can see the schedule of the festival here.

The Autodromo in Buenos Aires will have seven stages which will be the setting for DJs such as, Fedde Le Grand, Pete Tong, Afrojack and Pete Tong and many more international DJs. The festival starts on Saturday 12th November 2011 at 5.00pm and finishes at 06.00am on Sunday 13th November 2011. Tickets start at ARS$275 with an additional ARS$25 service charge. Click here to see the availability of Creamfields tickets.

However, if electronic music is not what you are into, then do not despair as there are other things to do in Buenos Aires such as, the 8th Night of the Museums is taking place on the same evening, Saturday 12th November 2011 from 8.00pm until 02.00am. Last year more than 600,000 people visited a variety of shows and spectacles in the museums and historic spaces of Buenos Aires. Seventeen more museums or historic spaces will be included in this year’s schedule making the Noche de los Museos the largest to date with 174 museums and cultural spaces opening their doors in 27 neighbourhoods.

Click to see which museums and where the activities will be taking place. The size of the Night of the Museums further proves why Buenos Aires is considered to be the unofficial capital of culture in Latin America. Not only do you get to see the fantastic exhibitions and take part in the cultural activities, but you can also do a bit of Buenos Aires sightseeing at night.

Click here to see the Night of the Museum’s activity schedule. No matter how you spend your Saturday night, we are sure that you will have a great time and hope you enjoy celebrating Buenos Aires’s diverse culture and events that are put on in this fantastic and exciting city year after year! Peddlers vs Shops on Florida Street http://bsas4u.com/blog/en/2011/08/peddlers-vs-shops-on-florida-street.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=peddlers-vs-shops-on-florida-street http://bsas4u.com/blog/en/2011/08/peddlers-vs-shops-on-florida-street.html#comments Tue, 23 Aug 2011 21:52:00 +0000 bsas4u http://bsas4u.com/blog/en/2011/08/peddlers-vs-shops-on-florida-street.html If you come to Buenos Aires and shopping is one of your favorite activities, Florida Street is indeed the ideal place to visit. If you come to Buenos Aires and shopping is one of your favorite activities, Florida Street is indeed the ideal place to visit. You can find hundreds of stores all along the traditional pedestrian Florida street, from where it starts, right by Avenida de Mayo, to where it ends on Avenida Santa Fe, right in front of San Martín park.

It is well known that Florida is a busy, attractive street for Buenos Aires tourists and one can’t help but notice the dozens of peddlers that invade this popular area every day of the week, from morning til midnight. It may seem a problem that there’re so many of them that it’s difficult to walk but no, it’s not – the real problem is that travelers, because they’re distracted with the street artists and products laying on the floor, don’t realize that buying from them causes economic damage to local shops, that pay taxes among many other expenses in order to sell their products legally, contributing to a healthy economy.

We must mention that there´s a difference from regular peddlers and artisans: the Buenos Aires city government allows and even encourages artisans & craft fairs since their products are hand-made but do not confuse them with regular peddlers which usually are goods resellers and they usually not only affect the local shops but also, sometimes, represent a safety issue for casual shoppers.

So even though travelers may find some great deals by buying from some of these peddlers you must bear in mind that by paying a little bit at regular stores, you will be helping the city’s economy and discouraging illegal business that feeds unfair competition and bad habits like pickpocketing and swindling.

As Buenos Aires feels a distinct chill in the air this June, we are ever more grateful for exciting indoor activities to discover in this multicultural hub of South America, especially so when it is one of the hottest FREE events on the Buenos Aires cultural calendar: Ciudad Emergente 2011 whose last year welcomed more than 130 thousand visitors and this year is expecting a larger audience than last year.

Brought to you by Buenos Aires’ Ministry of Culture, the festival Ciudad Emergente 2011 (meaning ‘Emerging City’) is in its fourth edition and set to inspire a whole new audience with its young artistically talented program. This wildly popular festival, will be held from the 16 to 20 June in the Recoleta Cultural Centre; the perfect environment to establish underground culture and emerging talent in the genres of music, film, art, dance, fashion, standup comedy and all forms of artistic expression of this century.

During the 5-day festival the Recoleta Cultural Center’s courtyards, terraces, chapel and even the corridors will be filled from 3pm in the afternoon until 9pm at night with Ciudad Emergente 2011’s thrilling agenda, presenting 50 connoisseur bands, including international guests who will be playing rock, pop and all its derivatives to engage the audience and offer a sample of the underground talent that is waiting to explode to the surface.

Previous editions of Ciudad Emergente have worked to introduce new Argentine talent such as Los Alamos and Victoria Mil with international performers like theXimena Sariñana (Mexico), Macaco Bong (Brazil) and Russian Red (Spain), with an outcome proving that pop culture can establish strong global ties, while other areas of the culture festival exposed a massive following for hip-hop, as it made its mark through music and street dance. A space was also curated and developed by the makers of the prestigious International Film Festival Independent films for BAFICI (Buenos Aires Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente) to exhibit quality documentaries and short films for a wider audience. Together with poetry, digital art and fashion, Ciudad Emergente attracted attention and visitors from all over the globe to follow the new trends in Buenos Aires, Argentina and worldwide culture.
