Buenos Aires has always been a top cultural and sightseeing destination, but you can now add premier culinary destination to its many laurels.

All this thanks to its recent gastronomic success, with 11 local restaurants making it onto the prestigious list of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants. This list and award ceremony is organised by William Reed Business Media and falls under the same umbrella as the associated lists, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.

So how does it work? An academy, made up of over 250 leaders in the restaurant industry, vote for their 7 top restaurants in Latin America, based on their personal experiences and expert knowledge. The open criteria for eligible restaurants means they can vote for any restaurant, no matter the size, age, type of cuisine or previous accolades. This allows for a wider selection of restaurants and a fair and comprehensive voting process.

The countries included in the list for Latin America are: Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guyana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.

So for Argentina to snatch 12 spots, 11 of which are in Buenos Aires, is no small feat!

Topping the list is Tegui, with its mysterious entrance, an inconspicuous doorway in a graffitied building, but opening up into a luxurious dining experience, with a modern and exciting menu. It’s no surprise that Germán Martitegui is climbing his way quickly to the title of the best chef in Argentina.
