5 Best Markets in Buenos Aires

Now that spring is in the air in Buenos Aires, a great way to explore the city is by wandering around its many markets or ferias.

Buenos Aires has some great outdoor markets, the perfect place to pick up a souvenir from your holiday in Argentina or presents to bring back to friends and family.

We’ve compiled a list of the 5 best and most popular markets in Buenos Aires - some of which should definitely not go a miss and make for great sightseeing tours around Buenos Aires.

1. Feria Artesanal Plaza Francia (Recoleta)
Saturday and Sunday, 9 am to 6 pm

An upmarket crafts market that covers almost the entire Plaza Francia, in the neighbourhood of Recoleta. You won’t find knock-off Maradona jerseys here. Instead there are lots of beautiful high quality typically Argentine artisan goods like silver jewelry, leather goods, ceramics, metalwork, and mate gourds.

On a sunny weekend, a trip to this market makes for a great Buenos Aires day out - there’s music, food stands – and a Buenos Aires top tip is to combine this market with a visit to the Recoleta Cemetery which is close by.

2. Feria de San Telmo (Plaza Dorrego)
Sunday 10am to 4pm
(Some activity on Saturdays)

A visit to San Telmo’s famous market is a highlight for visitors to Buenos Aires. The market is centered around the Antiques Fair on Plaza Dorrego, with crafts stalls extending down the cobblestone Calle Defensa. It has a lively atmosphere with street performers, tango dancers and hundreds of artists and artisans setting up stalls on the sidewalk. At the end of the day, as the stall holders pack up, the bars start to fill up and couples pair up on the cobbled square to dance tango. Well worth sticking around for!

3. Feria Artesanal Palermo Viejo (Plaza Armenia) & Feria Plaza Serrano
Both Saturday and Sunday, 11 am to 7 pm

These two markets are both located in the trendy neighbourhood of Palermo and lie within a few blocks of each other. These two squares are both trendy nightlife venues (as mentioned in our previous post) , with bars, cafes and restaurant spilling out into the streets. At the weekend local Buenos Aires designers, jewelers, artists set up their stalls on the plazas. Some great and unique keepsakes can be found here. As you’re in the centre of Palermo’s boutique shopping area, combining these two markets with a wander around the shops and cafés makes for a great Buenos Aires shopping day!

4. Feria Artesanal Parque Centenario (Caballito)
Saturday, Sunday 11am to 8pm

This market is a great alternative option, off the beaten tourist track, a market which was purely set up to serve the needs of Buenos Aires’ Residents. A wide variety of stuff can be found here. There is a Feria Americana (Buenos Aires’ second-hand/vintage shops), a flea market, and other bric-a-brac. There’s also food stands selling chori-pan, hamburgers, popcorn and treats for kids. If you’re not on a tight schedule on your vacation in Buenos Aires, a visit to the Parque Centenario is great way to get to know other, less touristy parts of Buenos Aires, even a wonder around the park itself is worth the trip.

5. Feria de Mataderos
Sundays, 11 am to 8 pm

Even though this market lies on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, it has become hugely popular with tourists visiting Buenos Aires who want an authentic Argentinean experience. It lies in the neighbourhood of Mataderos, which as its name suggests is where Buenos Aires’ slaughterhouses used to be. Formerly a cattle market, the Feria de Mataderos has now become a huge weekly event, with real gauchos (Argentine Cowboys), displays of horsemanship, live music, folk dancing, delicious traditional foods and beautiful handicrafts such as, leather goods, mate gourds, stone and silver jewelry and other great finds, that make for perfect souvenirs. It has a great lively atmosphere; however it is located in one of the poorest neighbourhoods of the capital and is a bit far off. Some tourist make their own way there; we do however recommend you book a tour to the Feria de Mataderos, which includes convenient transfer and pick-up.
